Disappointment prevailed in Lees Rd today when our boys lost the Division 4 Shield Final 4-2 despite a battling display.
We started brightly and enjoyed most of the possession for the first 15 minutes. We didn’t create any clear cut chances but the ball spent most of its time in the Avenue half. Then, against the run of play, Avenue scored after a fine solo run and finish by one of their players.
We immediately went on the attack again and rained a number of efforts on the Avenue goal without being able to beat their strong goalkeeper. Unfortunately we went in at half time 2-0 down after a mix up in our defence gifted a second goal to the opposition.
The second half was very open as we chased an elusive goal. Both teams had chances until disaster struck when Avenue scored from a penalty after a push in the box. Almost immediately we finally got a reward for our efforts after we won our own penalty for handball. Adam O’Brien smashed the ball cleanly into the back of the net and we were back in the game with 20 minutes remaining.
As we pushed forward we were leaving gaps at the back and this was punished by a scrappy 4th Avenue goal and all seemed lost. To the boys credit they kept going to the bitter end and Lucas Mulvihill pulled one back with 5 minutes left. Moments after the restart Calum Moloney then struck a beautiful shot from outside the box which crashed against the crossbar and, who knows, if that had gone in, a seemingly impossible equaliser could’ve been on the cards!
In the end it was our inability to take advantage of our superior possession in the first half that proved our undoing. Nevertheless spirits were kept high by finishing the game strongly and on another day with more luck the result would have been different.
Finally well done to Roan O’Mahoney who was named Man of the Match by the referee after a fine dominating performance in the middle of the pitch.
