After an extremely disappointing defeat to Avenue in last weeks Shield Final our boys turned the tables against the same opposition and came out 6-3 victors in the National Cup second round.

After a tense first half we went in at half time 1-0 down. Despite controlling the second half we went a further goal down midway through and it seemed as if it wasn’t to be our day.

However the boys pulled their socks up and grabbed a goal back from an inch perfect Liam Whelan free kick which sailed into the top corner. The Avenue goal was under siege in the search of an equaliser and with seconds remaining our Captain Fantastic Patrick Carey blasted a thunderbolt from outside the box to beat the outstretched keeper.

And so for the second week in a row we were in extra time against Avenue. Unfortunately like last week it didn’t start well and we fell 3-2 behind to a penalty in the opening minute or so.

But from then on it was a Moneypoint onslaught. Adam Roche got the equaliser with a super cool finish after racing onto a through ball behind the Avenue defence and it was 3-3 at half time of extra time.

After the turnaround we finally got our noses in front when Lorcan Carmody hit the net from close range after the ball pinballed around the box following a corner.  Adam Roche scored another almost carbon copy of his first goal to put some daylight between the teams before he finished off a fine days work with a perfectly executed “panenka” penalty which gave him a deserved hat trick and the proverbial match ball 😀

We face the winners of Moneygall or Aishling Annacotty at Gallery Park in a few weeks time. Please keep an eye out for the fixture and come and support our boys in their National Cup campaign.
