Moneypoint AFC U15B are through to the next round of the cup after a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Banner Rovers in an entertaining contest that had everything.
Fresh from an excellent performance on the same pitch just a few days earlier against different opposition, Moneypoint started with real purpose. From the first whistle they pressed high, refusing to give Banner Rovers any time on the ball, and it wasn't long before that pressure paid off.
In the 6th minute, Banner tried to play out from a short kick-out, but Moneypoint's relentless press forced a mistake. The ball broke kindly to Adam O'B, who made no mistake, calmly firing past the goalkeeper to give the visitors a deserved early lead. ⚽
The game settled into a fiercely contested battle, with both sides creating opportunities. Just before the break, Banner Rovers were rewarded from a corner when the ball landed around the six-yard box before the home side reacted quickest to bundle home the equaliser.
Banner came flying out after half-time and dominated the opening 15 minutes, putting Moneypoint under plenty of pressure. But once again the visitors showed great character, gradually working their way back into the game.
Their high press caused problems all evening, and with just five minutes remaining it paid off once more. Adam H robbed the defence of possession from another short kick-out before coolly finishing to put Moneypoint 2-1 ahead. ⚽
Heartbreak looked to be avoided, but Banner had one last twist in store. A long-range effort took a wicked deflection, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance as it found the back of the net to make it 2-2 and force extra time.
Both teams threw everything at it during extra time, but neither side could find the winner, leaving penalties to decide the outcome.
Banner won the toss and stepped up first, but their opening penalty missed the target, handing Moneypoint the advantage. The visitors were cool from the spot, converting every penalty with confidence. At the other end, Cian McM produced the moment of the shootout with a magnificent left-handed save when the ball looked destined for the corner. 🧤
